Blooming Onion

So if you’re really careful and patient with impeccable dexterity, you too can make a blooming onion.  This has been a request for awhile now and after only 4 failed attempts we finally fine tuned a process for you guys to fail at home as well.  Oh, but the sauce is really easy to make…  I think in the future onion petals would be a more practical way to eat a deep fried breaded onion even more so than an onion ring, but as I sit here typing and rambling, I’ve realized I’m not really selling anybody on this dish.  It tastes really good!

THINGS YOU'LL NEED:

Instructions:

  1. Cut an inch off the top of your onion and peel off all the skin keeping the root in tact
  2. Core out the center of the onion and discard
  3. To cut the onion, watch the video b/c its hard to explain in writing
  4. If you want your petals to branch out more, dunk it in boiling water for a minute and then dunk it in ice water to stop the cooking process
  5. Prepare the Dry Mix, Wet Mix & Sauce
  6. Toss the cut onion into the dry mix and make sure the flour gets into the nooks & crannies of the onion petals or it won't come out looking right
  7. Toss in wet mix and do the same thing
  8. Toss back in to dry mix for final coat, shake off any lose flour and freeze
  9. Get your oil to almost 400°F and fry for 6 minutes. The temperature of the oil will drop down to where you need it to be to finish cooking without burning
